Names & Attributes of Allah

Knowing Allah through His beautiful names — with reverence and accuracy.

Allah describes Himself in the Qur’an with names and attributes of perfection — the All-Merciful, the All-Knowing, the Most High, and many more. Learning them increases love, fear, and trust. We describe Allah only as He described Himself, without changing the meaning or comparing Him to creation.

Three categories of tawḥīd

Classical scholars organize monotheism into three areas that protect worship and belief.

  • Tawḥīd al-rubūbiyyah — Allah alone creates, sustains, and controls all affairs
  • Tawḥīd al-ulūhiyyah — worship, duʿāʾ, and obedience belong to Him alone
  • Tawḥīd al-asmāʾ wa-ṣifāt — affirm His names and attributes as revealed, properly

How we affirm attributes

When the Qur’an says Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, or above the Throne, we affirm the meaning Allah intended. We do not invent likeness to human bodies, nor do we deny the attribute because we cannot fully grasp divine reality.

  • Affirm the text as it came (ithbāt)
  • Do not ask “how” (kayf) where Allah did not explain
  • Do not liken Allah to creation (tamthīl)
  • Do not strip attributes of meaning (taʿṭīl)

Living with the names

Each name calls you to worship and character. Al-Ghafūr invites repentance; Al-Razzāq invites lawful effort with trust; Al-Ḥakīm invites patience with Allah’s decree.

  • Learn one name per week with its Qur’anic context
  • Call on Allah using names that match your need in duʿāʾ
  • Reflect: which name does this situation remind you of?

Practical tips

  • Start with the names repeated often in Qur’an: Ar-Raḥmān, Ar-Raḥīm, Al-Malik, Al-Quddūs.
  • Avoid debates on social media — learn from structured lessons and qualified teachers.
