Hayat al-Anbiya
The prophets are alive in their graves, worshipping Allah.
Hayat al-anbiya (life of the prophets in their graves) is a belief held by Ahl al-Sunnah: the prophets are alive in a manner that befits them — praying and receiving provision — unlike ordinary dead. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has the highest station among them.
Prophets are alive in the graves
Death for prophets is not like death for others. They remain alive in the barzakh (intermediate realm) with a life we do not fully comprehend — not like worldly life, and not like the complete life of the Hereafter.
HadithThe prophets are alive in their graves, praying.Sunan Abi Dawud 2041 — graded sahih by al-Albani; see also Musnad Ahmad
Qur'anAnd do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allah, “They are dead.” Rather, they are alive, but you perceive it not.Qur’an 2:154 — martyrs are alive; prophets have a greater rank
The Prophet ﷺ in his grave
He ﷺ hears salam from visitors and returns peace to those who greet him. This is unique to him among graves — a mercy and honor from Allah.
HadithAllah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of prophets. A prophet is alive in his grave and is given provision.Sunan Abi Dawud 1047 — graded sahih
HadithThere is no one who sends salam upon me except that Allah returns my soul to me so that I may return his salam.Sunan Abi Dawud 2041 — graded hasan sahih
Balance in creed
This life is not worldly life — prophets do not walk among us or rule nations from the grave. Worship is for Allah alone. Visiting Madinah to send salam is Sunnah; exaggeration or calling on the dead for help is shirk.
