Farewell Hajj (Hajjat al-Wada‘)
In 10 AH (632 CE) the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) performed his only complete Hajj. On the plain of Arafat he delivered the Farewell Sermon to a vast gathering of believers — the largest united assembly of sahabah in his lifetime.
Timeline & setting
The Prophet (ﷺ) left Madinah with a large caravan, teaching the rites of Hajj along the route. After completing the pillars at Makkah, he stood at Arafat on 9 Dhul Hijjah and addressed the ummah. Revelation of Qur'an 5:3 — completing the religion — is linked to this journey. He returned to Madinah and passed away in 11 AH, months after this pilgrimage.
About the “124,000” figure
Classical historians (including reports cited by Ibn Kathir) relate that when companions were counted or estimated at this Hajj, figures in the range of tens of thousands appear — with some narrations mentioning about 124,000 present. Scholars note variation in chains and wording; the precise number is not a matter of consensus like the 313 at Badr.
