Setting gemstones in jewelry — prong, bezel, and protecting the stone
Gemology workbook — ID, cutting, evaluation, setting, and birthstones next to the video.
Before metal meets stone
- Choose setting style for hardness and cleavage — emeralds favor protective bezels; diamonds often prong.
- Cut seat so the girdle is supported evenly; avoid point contact that can chip.
Bench workflow
- Bur selection for metal removal vs stone damage; check under loupe after each stage.
- Protect heat-sensitive stones from soldering flame — bury in sand / use laser or separate solder steps.
- Final prong alignment and retipping without over-torque on the girdle.
