Flying with a smartphone — apps, FPV, OTG, Wi‑Fi links
Drone workbook — build, tune, regulations, and smartphone apps next to the video.
What phones can do
- Configurator / ground station: Some stacks support USB OTG (Android) or companion apps for tuning / mission planning (platform-dependent).
- Wi‑Fi video: Some digital systems push a phone-viewable stream — latency & range differ from analog goggles.
- iPhone vs Android: OTG behavior and drivers vary — check FC / manufacturer docs.
Limits
- Phone screens sun glare and touch can be poor for fast FPV vs goggles + radio.
- Keep firmware / apps official; avoid sketchy “range hack” apps.
“Drone from smartphone” builds
Educational kits sometimes pair a micro quad with phone Wi‑Fi control — treat as short-range and follow the same battery and prop safety rules. For custom builds, prefer a dedicated radio for primary control and use the phone as secondary display or config tool unless your stack is explicitly designed for phone-only.
